Do Mai fans feel threatened by Madoka?
I know the Mai series is not entirely mainstream but at least it is well known enough to have lots of fans. I had seen some episodes of Madoka (barring the last two episodes as my computer is down T-T) and I must say it is quite good. It accomplished in twelve episodes what shows like Pretty Cure, Mai Hime and even Sailor Moon could not. The Hime series is good but the story got kind of lost to me during the Carnival arc but Madoka wrapped things up nicely. You don't find shows like that anymore but I wonder if Mai fans are threatened by the series?

((No on my end. The Mai-Series is a different series, despite some similarities it may share with Madoka. I try to enjoy each anime/manga series as individuals.))
Re: Do Mai fans feel threatened by Madoka?
I guess not, I am a fan of both series but the mai series does have a better varitety of characters.

(( I haven't finished Madoka, but so far I'm not entirely sold by the characters. I'm sold by the story and art, that much is certain. You're right about the variety, something the Mai-Series and Sailor Moon greatly have. By the end of Madoka, I'm hoping it lives up to the hype (but don't worry, my expectations aren't high in a sense that I wanna be surprised by this series), although it has a lot to live up to with names like Sailor Moon. Madoka is the Mason "the Line" Dixon of magical girls, it's fresh and there's nothing new out there currently that can rival it. Sailor Moon is the Rocky Balboa of magical girls. On top of the world during a stronger era of anime/manga fandom. Though it has long since ended, it's trying to gain a comeback with it's upcoming U.S. manga re-release, and among other things that may surface in the future.))
Re: Do Mai fans feel threatened by Madoka?
Madoka seemed to be more focused on pushing the envelope of what a Mahou Shoujo series can be in terms of tone and artistry. It was a mahou shoujo with seinan undertones with regards to its content. While I think that Mai HiME was produced with that 2am time slot young adult male audience in mind. I don't know that risk taking was ever something really intended by the author, and probably certainly not be Sunrise. So I think they're kind of two different animals, despite being shows with magical girls in them.
I enjoyed Madoka quite a bit, but I can't say that I was as emotionally engaged in it. To be honest, I wasn't emotionally engaged with Mai HiME until the carnival got rolling either. I find it interesting that that's where you got lost GAP...would you mind explaining your feelings about that further?
For me Madoka was more of that psychological series than a drama, I tend to kind categorize it more with shows like Higurashi and Shiki.

I haven't noticed or seen any person, fan of the Mai series or not, who feels 'threatened' by Madoka. In fact quite the opposite. Most people absolutely love Madoka (myself included). I was simply blown away by just the first two episodes of that series. The typical 'magical girl show' it is not, and I love that especially about Madoka =3

Re: Do Mai fans feel threatened by Madoka?
Madoka shocks me in a different way than Mai HiME shocks me. They're the same genre but they're really completely different. For me, Madoka hit different chords than HiME and Otome did. So I don't feel like the fandoms or anything would really butt heads over anything. Aside from who they think is prettier or something trivial like that. But otherwise, I don't feel like the fandoms would clash so much like some of the other fandoms I know would.

No, not at all.
The Mai-Series is one anime, Madoka another. I'll always like Mai HiME/Mai Otome, who cares if people favour one show from another?

Thanks for the links. =)
Er... Based on the blurb, it sounds like another magical girl anime, which I've never been a fan of. (-waits for the obvious question/statement-) That "psychological thriller" tag threw me off, but otherwise it kinda sounds like... well, a standard magical girl anime. I've never been able to sit through one of those without getting bored. ^^;

Just watch the first two eps at least, Plush. Trust me...the term 'magical girl' will be the furthest thing from your mind after you see them ^^Yuri-hime wrote:I haven't noticed or seen any person, fan of the Mai series or not, who feels 'threatened' by Madoka. Re: Do Mai fans feel threatened by Madoka?
I've heard nothing but good things about Madoka and would love to give it a try. As for feeling threatened nope! The animes of My Hime/Otome will always hold a special place in my heart but that doesn't mean I can't love other anime as well.
In fact the only thing that makes me feel threatned in regard to the My franchise is the first Hime manga and the Otome manga(grrr SFX).

Re: Do Mai fans feel threatened by Madoka?
I can probably give a more detail explanation from a person-who-doesn't-know-better's perspective once I actually finish Madoka. I say that because my opinion stands that this topic is another apples and oranges thing. As most of you know, it's Madoka is making it's North American debut this February. :) Expect a bump in the future.
Re: Do Mai fans feel threatened by Madoka?
I don't feel threatened by Madoka, if we should feel threatened by anything it should be those overrated mass series like Naruto, One Piece and Bleach (rest in peace sweet prince), Madoka actually opens up so many possible fan fiction crossover ideas it's making me crazy I have to write something

One Piece and Naruto don't concern me because they're essentially the same episode every time. Successful Shonen anime follow in Dragon Ball/Z's footsteps and trust me, that is not a good thing. We're lucky, guys; many of you need to remember that the Mai-Series is longer than the mega popular Evangelion and Madoka. Those behind these series, as well as Mai-HiME/Otome, remember that "less is more." Milk it too long and it becomes forgettable. Mai-HiME/Otome can probably go to the 200 episodes at best like the original Sailor Moon anime did, to cover all the off-screen stories like Natsuki no Prelude, the two Otome wars, what happened after Mai-HiME, when Mashiro possessed Kagutsuchi, etc.
Re: Do Mai fans feel threatened by Madoka?
Well, I've seen Madoka and I didn't feel any threat from it.
I highly doubt that the Hime/Otome fandom should be concerned of any other anime shadowing them.
What I think we should fear moe is Sunrise doing something that resembles Hime/Otome and doing it wrong. Or taking the series again and butcher it while trying to remake it.

Re: Do Mai fans feel threatened by Madoka?
What ShezNek says. The reality is that Mai-HiME/Otome's greatest foe is practically itself. Sunrise is the only ones who can produce new material for the series.
Re: Do Mai fans feel threatened by Madoka?
I also highly doubt that Sunrise would be willing to risk what they've done to the Hime/Otome franchise by modifying it, remaking it or whatever. It certainly would anger the fans. Specially since it really was a hit in Japan back in those days...

10 years is too soon for any kind of remake. Mai-HiME/Otome still look fresh today, with it's modern animation. Remaking it is not an option. I will only accept a continuation or either HiME/Otome or the introduction of the Mai-HiME Destiny anime at best.

I would also accept them turning the Mai HiME or the Mai Otome Manga into a anime

Re: Do Mai fans feel threatened by Madoka?
I prefer to see Destiny animated. Maybe as OVAs since those usually have more budget and the plot is better adapted.
