What happened to American music? (2008 to present) Is Foreign or Old School music an alternative?

Hello everyone. Over the years I have noticed (and I'm sure you guys have seen it too) that American music has degenerated from renowned music artists like Tupac, Biggie, Metallica, Guns and Roses etc., all of whom spoke about the harsh reality of the challenges we all go through and how we had to keep going no matter what, to explicit descriptions of sex and sex organs, the supposed "importance" of treating women like sex slaves and not caring about women in general, and corny love songs that don't make any fucking sense, all the way to talking about how much people love Friday >_>. Yet if you look at music from foreign places, like the girl rock band SCANDAL of Japan, common topics are about love and the value of it, and to stand up in the face of a challenge, much like Old School American music. Thus this brings up an important question, what the fuck happened to America? Feel free to comment and share your thoughts on the music of today, the past, and of other countries.

Hoo boy, there's a lot that needs to be said here. I'm about to snap, so it's wise to not go into too much detail. All I can say for now is music today is a result of the times. When rap started, it was innocent with little to non-existent naughty lyrics. Salt-N-Pepa sung about sex, but it presented in a cheesy tongue in cheek type way. Today, a brother will tell you in every little detail how he fucked his woman and then call it "an art form" in an interview. Beauty is the eye of the holder of course, still it's not my type of music.

Ah, Metallica and Guns and Roses are perfect examples of great music and expression. This will be controversial of me to say, but I felt Kurt Cobain ruined the era 80s music with Nirvana. Again, personal opinion. It's another example of music making that shift to reflect today's society, whether it was intended or not.

Most of the positive messages in songs come from top names like Katy Perry, Lady GaGa and P!nk. All showing support for the oppressed, standing up for yourself and being awesome (aka being yourself). Music isn't as great as it used to be, true, but there are still some who lighten my spirits. Mostly the ladies. I didn't expect Demi Lovato, someone who made her rise to fame with Disney, to move me with her latest hits.

Ara~ that is so true. I haven't listened to Nirvana >_> so I cant comment on that. Lady Gaga and Katey Perry etc. can be good influences, but I kinda got bored with them, especially with all that crazy press they were getting, I was like "really nao? >_>" then again I'm more of a rock n roll person, so their Popness is probably what bored me. I was raised on Old School music as well, so I feel even more oppositon to the new "music" of my generation. Plus I'm sick of going to school and hearing about young men saying their gonna bang grandmas and moms (that just sounds sickening to me, it's so fucking nasty)and then having to deal with my brainwashed classmates is a pain in the ass, I often want to ask them, "where did your humanity go?"

Hmm, I can't say a lot to this. I rarely listen to American music, save a few exception like a couple of bands or...a song I'm addicted too. I do however realize how song lyrics got progressively worse with rap music...well, not rap, but I pay attention to rap the most.

My genre has always been with british rock or Jrock, Jpop so...yea ^^;

Those lyrics are the reason why i moved away from American music, and started listening to Japanese music. ^ ^

Indeed, what has happened about the American music? It has certainly made changes in the course of time.

I have to admit that I listen to old school music, especially the '80s. They're ton better than the music today. About the old school, they have a variety of themes within their songs, and explicitly tell of good morals or something better than sex (i.e. "Fame" >_> I'm not really sure if it is '80s or '90s though).

Current songs have double meanings, especially about the theme of sex once again. To think of a song bluntly stating sex gives me the creeps. I don't know why even people like it.

It's such a relief that our local songs aren't like so, and tries to make people understand what's happening around.

I would consider foreign songs to be alternative, but I'd give it some time to know the full meaning though.
