What song pulls at your heart strings?
For me it has to be "Cats in the Cradle". My reason, watch this video which was an anti-terrorism tv ad here in Northern Ireland in 1992.
I honestly can't remember the last time I've been able to listen to the whole song, I can't even watch the whole video, just watched a few seconds to check the quality.

My Heart Will Go On ~ Celine Dion/Titanic.
We played this at my grandma's funeral and it always makes me wonder...
Also, Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls.
This song always gets me...

Re: What song pulls at your heart strings?
THIS song:
What makes it even worse is my boyfriend linked to the song when I was thinking of it once. This song? It makes him cry if I remember correctly. I hate the song just because, but he really hates this song. It tears at my emotions every time I listen to it (which I don't anymore). ;-;

Most definitely 'Wakette Ita Hazu' from Fushigi Yuugi, 'Scarlet' from Ayashi no Ceres and 'Moon' from Chance Pop Session.
Miaka & Tamahome - Wakette Ita Hazu
Ayashi No Ceres Japanese Opening
Chance Pop Session: scene
Without going into too much detail, these three songs capture a mixed sense of romance, a bit of loss and hope.

Ashita Kuru Hi from Kobato, this song is just too beautiful for words.
Especially from this scene.
Especially from this scene.

Oh, I totally forgot about "How You Remind Me" and "Never Gonna Be Alone", both from Nickelback. *Will edit this post later*
And by the way, I just loved "Make Me Real", Sergay-sama(Ah... Beware with me!... I'm in love with Sergay). =]

Re: What song pulls at your heart strings?
This isn't the type of music I usually listen to, but every single time I hear this song, tears come to my eyes. The lyrics are just... They may not be overly sad, but they still get to me.
(The video of the city that did this song for the world record was amazing to watch, though. o_o)

Re: What song pulls at your heart strings?
well you did ask what ones make me cry or at least put tears in my eyes so here they are:
"Sora" by Yoko Kanno off of the Escaflowne: A Girl in Gaea ost. This song is just so damn beautiful that sometimes even thinking about it makes my eyes water at the thought that it even exists, its just so amazingly well done and it makes me think back to the older days before Anime became what it was and how it was this great new thing that we were all just getting into, as well as making me think back to when a few stores I liked were still around, and when a woman I loved more than anything was still in my life.
"Half Pain" by Bana. off of the Witch Hunter Robin ost: Its hard to find an ending theme as depressing and somewhat beautiful as this one. Its what I listen to when I'm feeling mellow and down after a rough day from whatever reason.
"Theme of Gemini" off of the Android Kikaider the animation ost. Kikaider the anime by itself is a really depressing series but its this theme song that really hammers the point home as to just how sad it is just by playing in the background amidst the hand drawn and painted images of the characters and what they're truly like in their own element. All of this is accomplished without a single lyric being sung. Truly an accomplishment
"Wild Horses" by The Sundays - Its not the original Rolling Stones version but its really depressing when you sit and listen to it all the way through, something I even have trouble doing at times.
"The Burning Red" by Machine Head of of the Burning Red album: Such a loud and heavy album ends with a very somber and depressing sound of the singer talking about what he's feeling as he lays dying. Its not a song to mosh to, its a song to close your eyes to and hope the pain just goes away quickly.
There are others but I can't think of anymore at the moment. Tell me what you think

Re: What song pulls at your heart strings?
Thought of a few others:
"Mad World" by Gary Jules - Its not the original version of Tears for Fears but damn if Gary doesn't make it one of the most depressing covers ever. You will believe that the world has no hope or happiness in it after you hear this song.
"Gatsu" by Susumu Hirasawa off of the Berserk anime ost - its not depressing but its one of the more beautiful tracks I've heard, in the same vein as Sora. It makes you want to sit down, look to the sky and wonder about your place in life and ask if its what you truly want to do with it. Its one of the softer tracks in a series that's made a name for itself by being one of the most violent and bloody in the history of manga.
"Hurt" by Johnny Cash from the Man Comes around album - Trent Reznor's old version was sad as it got original. But when Cash sings this song it becomes a brand new type of pain that even Reznor himself said that its not Cash's song and not his anymore. To truly hammer the point home, watch the music video and watch Johnny close the lid of the piano over the keys and shakily slide his hand across it. You will never find a more poignant scene of finality anywhere else.
That scene alone just says "Its Over" like no other.
"King of Pain" by Sting and the Police - Some people say its too whiney but it was a track that I listened to quite often when I was feeling down, thinking of how bad the character's life must have been like and how he must have suffered the entire time.
I'll probably think of some more, somewhere down the line
