The "I Need Some Anime Recommendations" Thread

I'm surprised that such a thread hasn't been started here yet so I figured I'd start it. I'm sure that from time to time people look for new anime to watch, and are looking for specific things, but have a hard time finding what they want. In this thread, post what you're looking for, which some examples that you think fit, and any other requirements you have.

I'll start!

I've started on the last box set series that I have in my reserves, so I'm thinking ahead as to what I want to try next. Lately I've been into the girls with guns type of stuff, having watched Noir, Madlax, and I just started El Cazador de la Bruja. I'm looking to find more anime that's action and involves strong female leads. They don't have to have guns, mind you, and it doesn't have to be yuri. XD I don't want something cutesy and frilly either. I've looked at Ga Rei Zero, which I'm considering, and then Red Garden as well, so if anyone has anything on those two or would recommend them, let me know. As you can see, most of the things I mentioned have a TV14 or MA rating.

My first requirement is that it must be licensed and available to purchase in the US. I rarely ever watch a series on my computer anymore. I usually watch an episode with dinner each night so I like to be able to pop it in my TV. It also helps support the industry, which I'm capable of doing and try to whenever I can. My second requirement is that it have at least 20 episodes. I'd really like to watch Canaan, for example, but it being so short doesn't make it the ideal purchase right nao.

Animes You've Watched

nao then, calculating all the requirements in my head, one VERY good series comes to mind. With any luck, you love it as much as I did: Ergo Proxy.




Rich dark universe with an even richer story that is reminiscence of Ghost in the Shell. The main character is Re-l Mayer, who I jokingly call "Gun happy Amy Lee(from the band Evanescence)". I figured you'd enjoy a sophisticated psychological thriller.

Anyone can help me with an anime recommendation? With Madoka filling my under-26 episode needs and LilPri filling my cutesy needs, I'm looking for something with romance and a lot of action. It needs to be a female lead with a good dynamic cast of characters. Episode length matters not, although I'm hoping this title is an underrated legend in the making. ))

It seems like Ergo Proxy may have to wait. I found one site that may have it under $40... I may wait until Otakon to see if I can get it any cheaper.

I looked into things Chibi but I only saw a good deal on the first volume. An alternative to what Luu recommend, Ergo probably much better, but you might want to try out Kiddy Grade and all of it's cheesy goodness.

I have nothing to recommend to a dude who pretty watched what I could have recommended but eh, watch the first season of Comic Party man!

On my end I would like to ask for magical girl series. I like magical girl stuff in general and I would like to get knowledgeable on the genre. I'm also creating a magical girl series myself, and one of the things I would do with it is pay major homage to all magical girl stuff(sorta like Madoka but even more) while providing a unique entry into the magical girl series.

Ruby, I looked at the things you've watched, and it seems like you've got a variety of tastes so I'd say

Murder Princess (Short 6 ep OVA and cheap)
El Cazador de la Bruja

Just for a start. Murder Princess was my recent favorite, and definitely has lesbian subtext. Enough that it's super easy to write fic based around what's there.

Level E (great comedy show, many troll moments)
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (hilarious take on political commentary)
Bakemonogatari (great take on harems and I thought it was rather funny)

Great selections in Honey and Clover, The Nanoha Series and Cazador. :) I'm currently on my Burst Angel rewatch, so if you want a great combination of stylish action mecha, girls-with-guns, yuri subtext action from Gonzo Animation, I highly recommend it.

Okay looking for some different things this time. I'm looking for series that are yuri or have some yuri subtext going on. Once again, I have to be able to buy them at a decent price. Lately it seems I pay around $20 or less for a 13 ep series, and usually no more than $30 for a 26 ep series. So while I want to see Canaan, it's way too expensive to justify. I'm not into the slice of life stuff much and prefer some good ol' action. Oh and Utena is not my thing. This is what I've seen that is yuri/yuri subtext:

Yours is a bit similar to my list, save for I don't necessarily need humor.

Someone said El Cazador, so also try Madlax. It's from the same company. Murder Princess is good too, also from the same company as the first two. I'd also go for Sands of Destruction. The lead is shared by 3, but the one is a strong female bent on destroying the world. Don't let the cute mascot mislead you. For me, it was a hidden gem series.

El Cazador is interesting, but I haven't watched enough of it to really say. I'll try Sands of Destruction next.

Yay for SoD! :D I ended up getting a DS so I could play the video game for it...still working on playing, but it's so much more fun after seeing the show. It does present a different storyline though.

I've finished the first episode, and it's quite interesting albeit weird. I like the female lead, and the male lead also. It should prove to be a good series.
