I enjoyed the Mai-Otome manga, it's very over-the-top in both action and fanservice compared to it's anime counterpart. And the Mai-Otome anime excelled in the action department. I love the anime more, just because it had a more coherent story and Arika doesn't take a wee backseat. Arika Yumemiya is the greatest character from any Mai-series incarnation, too epic for secondary position. ^_^

I read it about 2 years ago (am def gonna have to read again cause I can't rem much of it) through one of those manga apps on the iPod Touch but then it must have been taken off. I've been looking around the net and any shop that sells books for this but like all good manga/anime they are near impossible to get here and have to be ordered from overseas.

Just wondering how do people read the manga they get from here? I always convert the image files to a pdf file so that I can read them on my iPod Touch with the GoodReader app. It can be a nuisance esp when there are images in the folder than are landscape but its nice to have each chapter in just one file and to be able to read them clearly where ever I am. The iPods ability to zoom in tight on images just doesn't cut it

I read normally on my PC with a set up timer for the slide show feature. I'd like to use the iPad someday to read manga, although I'm not ready to move into the future just yet. haha. Though I may have to since reading scans on the computer isn't easy. I get distracted easily by other things. Main reason why I print out fanfiction and read them in bed.

Thanks for your quick thoughts on the Mai-Otome manga! It's a strange hybrid of fanservice and fantasy to me. The whole Mai-Otome verse looks so beautiful and sophisticated in manga art (to me anyway). Anyone who says the Otome robes are drawn badly in the manga is either silly or lying. :3

Mai-Otome Manga Collection Empty Re: Mai-Otome Manga Collection

Post by The Fire Stirring Ruby Thu Oct 29, 2015 8:53 pm

Discovered that Kenetsu Sato (the artist of the Mai-HiME manga) also drew the Mai-Otome manga. The art was more breathtaking than the HiME, surprisingly.

Quoting Noburo Kimura, the one in charge of the HiME manga story: "It is created differently. The story is different."

I read the manga first before watching the anime, to be honest. And I truly liked the story, which made me wish before that they should have adapted this one.

Not many like the manga, but it also has a charm. It is different from the anime and that is one reason to like it. There's the thrill of not knowing what's going to happen next.

Mai-Otome Manga Collection Empty Re: Mai-Otome Manga Collection

Post by Zweifel Marguerite Fri Oct 30, 2015 8:29 pm

Contrary to Ruby, I actually watched the anime first, and I read the manga solely because it was rumored to be super different. I was skeptical at first, since I can't say I am all crazy for HiME manga which I had read prior to that, but I gave it a chance. Aaaaaaaaaand... I absolutely loved it!
The plot was amazingly done, and characters were so over the top and ridiculous, and yet still awesome to no end. I prefer a lot of manga character versions. Seeing Sergay as a villain was a nice surprise, Lena being alive, the HiMEs, Arashi, Haruka and Yukino still kicking so much ass, non-evil Tomoe, Erstin with a Meister GEM... and I am probably biased, but I liked Shiro much better as a protagonist, in comparison to Queen Mashiro, mostly because Shiro has yet to cause me sigh with annoyance. And somehow, manga makes you feel genuinely concerned about him. I wanted him to overcome his problems, I wanted to see him advance, which all points to what a good storyline the manga has. So many people say the characters have been shallowed down, but it's not true at all.
The manga is definitely not everyone's cup of tea, and I can somewhat see why. However, I often feel like people simply refuse to give it a chance because it's different, kind of like people hesitated to give Mai-Otome a try because it wasn't the sequel to Mai-HiME everybody wanted.
I liked the manga, because it reminds me a lot of my other favourite series - Katekyo Hitman Reborn. It is a very silly series - a VERY silly series, let me tell you - and it's a huge part of what I love about it. But it also knows when to deliver drama and be serious, and the constrast between the everyday silly stuff and seriousness makes the entire experience so much better. Same with Otome manga - it was a rather ridiculous experience filled with tons of fanservice and gorgeous art, and, despite all of this, managed to tell a fascinating story.
I am very happy I've managed to find Ruby, because I sometimes feel so utterly alone on the manga liking front. Not many people even give it a chance (''Mashiro has a dick'' is apparently a very scary thought), and barely anyone likes it. I don't expect people to like it in huge quantities, but I often feel like folks give manga a lot of bullshit (like saying that characters are horrible or that it doesn't have a solid story) that is undeserved.

I would kill to see the manga version animated! However, in all fairness, I also liked the way anime chose to do things. I liked them both equally, because they are 2 different stories - anime is all about Arika, while the manga focuses on Shiro. I sometimes kick anime for some things, like killing off Erstin, making Tomoe so psychotic and NOT HAVING ARASHI (seriously, what the hell?), but both of them appealed to me equally through different means.

Mai-Otome Manga Collection Empty Re: Mai-Otome Manga Collection

Post by The Fire Stirring Ruby Mon Nov 02, 2015 6:57 am

OKAY, I NEEDED TO PUT IN A DISCLAIMER. SPOILERS!

Zweifel Marguerite wrote:The plot was amazingly done, and characters were so over the top and ridiculous, and yet still awesome to no end. I prefer a lot of manga character versions. ^ Well said, Zweifel. I couldn't have said it any better.

(By Shiro, you mean Mashiro the dude, right?) I can't say that I prefer which version of Mashiro do I like: the anime one or the manga one. It's more like they are two different persons. Both were ... challenged at their respective debuts. Mashiro was a spoiled brat who thought that the only person that matters is her. Shiro (Mashiro the dude), on the other hand, was always running away from his problems. The anime and the manga have presented a wonderful character development for these two characters. Thinking about it now, I prefer Shiro's character development because he became a different person than he was before, facing his fears head on. Mashiro's development was more on the touching side for me.

Many consider the manga to be a spin-off of the animated series, even though the manga was probably released earlier than the anime itself. Well, it is subjective which one is canon and which is the spin-off. I could care less because it presented an alternate universe to us fans: a universe of what ifs where Tomoe is good (!), Lena is alive (!!), Erstin is alive and boots a Meister GEM (!!!), and Sergay is the big bad (!!!!). kawaiidesuplz I could go on about the what ifs, but that's too much spoiler for one post.

For the curious, here's what I remember:

Zweifel Marguerite wrote:Same with Otome manga - it was a rather ridiculous experience filled with tons of fanservice and gorgeous art, and, despite all of this, managed to tell a fascinating story.

In hindsight, that was an awful amount of fanservice right off the bat that, after re-reading it, could either be (1) intentional, considering it is published in Shonen Champion Comics or (2) just for the recurring humor. As a female, I would think that it is the latter.

Fanservice aside, it has a beautiful art and story. I like how the writer(s) did the character developments for everyone. Don't tell anyone, but I really liked Chapters 31 onwards... Mostly because of bias that the HiME are there! And because we see the origins of Shiro.

Zweifel Marguerite wrote:The manga is definitely not everyone's cup of tea, and I can somewhat see why. However, I often feel like people simply refuse to give it a chance because it's different, kind of like people hesitated to give Mai-Otome a try because it wasn't the sequel to Mai-HiME everybody wanted.

Zweifel Marguerite wrote:I don't expect people to like it in huge quantities, but I often feel like folks give manga a lot of bullshit (like saying that characters are horrible or that it doesn't have a solid story) that is undeserved.

^ I have to agree. People have to have an open mind reading a manga that is not a faithful (for the lack of better term) adaptation of the anime. They need to give it a chance, or read it until the last chapter at least.
I wouldn't dare to say that the manga doesn't have a solid story. Rather, it's something that is kind of hard to swallow since it has a complex (?) story line and that your knowledge of the anime is somewhat helpful to an extent.

Okay, I really need to re-read the entire thing again. It's been years since I last read it, and I want to make sure I remember correctly.
