Reito Kanzaki doesn't fail at controlling her primal urges for Mai. At least he didn't force himself onto Mai like Ishigami did with Sister Yukariko. o.o

Mashiro from Mai Hime fails at being at being entertaining but Mashiro from Mai Otomefails at being anything other than a common plotline.

I don't agree. It was more like the things happening around Mashiro; like the Slums people and Aswald being the sympathetic ones the whole time. Kind of. Queen Mashiro's story was no different than Marie Antoinette's, only Mashiro's ended happily and with a girlfriend to boot. Quite a developed character like her two co-stars (Arika and Nina). All anime contains "tropes", it's a matter of them being good or not and, in my brain, Mai-Otome pulled them off quite well. Better than Mai-HiME, imo.

And Nina fails at having a father complex, Nina has issues and she needs to deal with them. Her manga counterpart didn't ave these issues and that is a good thing for her character in my opinion.

Mikoto does not fail at having a big appetite even Son Goku would be humbled by her...
