Erstin's demise was the turning point in the same way Nagi's Carnival announcement was the turning point in Mai-HiME. It made Arika and Nina enemies, shifting the entire series in a darker direction. Say what you will about Mai-Otome being not as good as HiME, Otome pulled no punches when it come to deaths. Erstin was a good friend to our two main characters, they loved her very much and it's a shame nothing good came for her in the end.

In a perfect world, Nina would accept Erstin's feelings. :(
