Luu Sky Sapphire reviews Kill la Kill Episode 1:
*walks in*
Ahem....*inhales deeply...SO THERE'S THIS SCARY STUDENT COUNCIL PRESIDENT WHO IS ALSO KNOWN AS HARUKA SUZUSHIRO WHO IS LIKE "I AM A FACKING BADASS" WITH HER GROUP OF STEREOTYPE GOONS!!!! MEANWHILE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE MEET THE SUPER AWESOME CHICK NAMED RYUUKO WHO GETS IS LIKE SUPER AWESOME RADICAL GIRL! SHE MEETS WITH C-KO WHO CAME OUT OF RETIREMENT AND GETS HER ASS HANDED TO HER BY ANGRY BOXER GUY AND HIS TINY PENIS. RYUUKO SOMEHOW RETURNS TO BATTLE WITH THE POWER OF A HALLOWEEN DECORATION WHO THINKS HE'S A SAILOR FUKU. THIS MAKES RYUUKO SUPER STRONG AND SUPER sorta-NAKED AND SHE OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SCISSOR BLADE! ITZ SOOOOOOOOOO AWESOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!! THE EXHIBITIONIST GET KNOCKED THE fack OUT TWICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! COWABUNGA, RYUUKO!!!!!! YOU ARE THE FUTURE QUEEN OF HONNOUJI! THE REST OF SATSUKI'S GOONS WILL BE ADDED TO YOUR HIT LIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This piece of insanity in an insane asylum is by Hiroyuki Imaishi who is responsible for the series, Gurren Lagann. The series that had giant mecha toss GALAXIES. That alone screams "WE DON'T CARE!!!!!" and this series is no different. Although unlike Gurren Laggan, I was quite impressed with this one. Sure, I don't know what Honnouji Academy is about, I don't understand why they would let a madwoman like Satsuki Kiryuin run the place and why the school is run with militaristic strictness and it's perfectly obvious that Satsuki IS the one who killed Ryuuko's father! Predictable and over the top doesn't begin to describe this Shonen action orgy.
But you know what? I LOVE IT! _ Finally an action Shonen-esque anime that's honest about it's stupidity and isn't trying to be something deep. The last pure Shonen to do this was Toriko, which wasn't that long ago. It makes me feel more hopeful for Shonen if they're becoming self aware of their retardation. It's a shame Shingeki no Kyojin isn't doing the same, but beggars can't be choosers.
Kill la Kill reminds me of a ton of different series from the past. Surprisingly not one reviewer made the connection between this series and a classic nobody but war horses like me would remember: Project A-ko! The character of Mako Mankanshoku is the C-Ko of 2013 in every single regard. I thought nobody could ever out-airhead C-Ko until Mako came around.
You may not of noticed it, but your brain did.
We do get amazing old school animation that is stylized to perfection. One of the best aspects of the show is how expressive it is through the artwork. There's a lot of fluid animation going on in every single frame! Studio Trigger spent a lot of money and time into this one; it's more visually stunning than that one-shot Little Witch Academia from months ago.
Kill la Kill is stupid good fun. I'm going to watch the next available episodes later today. Not for plot, story or character development this time. This series only offers what it can: violence, fanservice and great animation. Just remember to bring ear plugs if your ears are sensitive.
+ Breathtaking VINTAGE animation!
+ Battles were fast pace!
+ Mako is the new C-ko!
+ Ryuuko and Satsuki is a PPV match waiting to happen. I can't wait to see these two fight.
-/+ Blah soundtrack. This could of been more memorable.

So did anyone else watch this steroid induced show? Leave a comment or 12 below and let me know.
Re: Kill la Kill Discussion Thread
I'm watching it!
So strange, but also funny! Episode 3 can't be better, Luu! They finally got a fight! I really like the animation because I also like Gurren Lagann The story... how can I describe it better than you, Luu?

Re: Kill la Kill Discussion Thread
Yeah, it was shocking to see Ryuuko and Satsuki have an epic battle to the death in episode 3. I was like "ALREADY!?" haha! Very good stuff. Luckily for the audience, Satsuki won the fight, despite Ryuuko's aggressive efforts. It's not quite time for Satsuki to get beaten or die yet! Ryuuko has a lot of stereotype mid-bosses to beat first. Can't wait to see the fourth episode.Natsukichan1 wrote:I'm watching it!

I'm still banking on Satsuki being the killer. It's the obvious we won't have confirmed until Ryuuko and Satsuki have their rematch. X3Natsukichan1 wrote:Yup, that's right :)I kind of knew that something like this would happen ;)And I hope Ryuuko finds the murder of her father!

Don't beat yourself up over it, Nats. Kill la Kill is still new after all. I'm in the same boat as you anyway. I can barely find anything with these two yet. Luu Sky Sapphire Reviews: Kill la Kill Episode 4

WHAT THE HELL DID I JUST WATCH!? Yeah, I know that's the usual response for this series, but hear me out! The previous episode had a clear "plot" and character motivation going on: Avenge the father. Kick lots of Student Council President ass. This episode on the other hand takes a completely different turn! Not just in the overall point of the series, but also the artwork! The former has no excuse for being a clusterf*ck of weird; the latter on the other hand DOES! The inconsistent animation (that doesn't match previous episodes) throughout the anime pokes fun at the old cel animation era, it's so obvious.
Now, what exactly was this random episode about? Put simply, it's about getting to class on time. I'm serious. That's it. Ryuuko and Mako are hit with the "No-Late Day" event at their school. A whacky event where all the students must make their way through countless booby traps. This results in the comedic deaths of millions of students. XD Again, the anime might as well have "WE DON'T CARE" text flashing throughout this episode. Our heroes (pfft) then meet a nerd girl with a cast named Maiko, who turns out to be our daily villain because she wants Ryuuko's Senketsu to defeat Satsuki. So let me get this straight, ANOTHER girl has her own agenda? Well this show succeeded in finding someone that's more of a loose cannon than Ryuuko herself! This episode had me and my girlfriend laughing our heads off, I enjoyed it.
+ Throwback to cel animation and art team rotation.
+ Maiko. This girl is scary.
+ Funny...
- ...but hideously stupid. LOL!
- No Satsuki. -_-
Re: Kill la Kill Discussion Thread
Oh, yeah, you're right. I laughed so much that my stomach hurt X.x But some funny episodes are needed to MAKE it funny, right?
Re: Kill la Kill Discussion Thread
True! Again, the episode wasn't bad, it just didn't have the structure of the previous three episodes. They all had hilarious randomness and a clear goal for both Ryuuko and Satsuki. That's why I was expecting Ryuuko to take on her next great opponent in episode 4. Instead we get a filler. :3 A laugh-out-loud filler. xDNatsukichan1 wrote:Oh, yeah, you're right. XD That's a good sign! Sure, your comment indicates another random episode, but how can it get anymore silly than episode 4! We'll find out soon! *watches*Natsukichan1 wrote:I've alredy watched it xD

Re: Kill la Kill Discussion Thread
These are great! <3 Ryuuko x Mako would be nice too, although it's hard to picture Mako in any kind of relationship. She's the type that would say..."relationship? Is that some kind of new tampon brand?"Natsukichan1 wrote:Here, as promised, a few Ryuuko x Satsuki images:

Also, forgive me for my lateness. XD My reviews of the latest episodes (5 and 6) will be coming soon. I've been so busy lately. ;A;
Re: Kill la Kill Discussion Thread
That's okay, Luu^^
Yeah, I think so too, but it seems that Ryuuko x Mako are more popular that Ryuuko x Satsuki O.o

I'll be reviewing episode 6 as soon as I can (followed by episode 7), but I was able to squeeze in my review of episode 5:

Luu Sky Sapphire reviews Kill la Kill Episode 5: Hikigane (Trigger)
Tsumugu Kinagase attempts to assassinate Ryuuko in the opening scene, but he is then interrupted by Yaguruma. He's the general manager of the Gardening Club. He kindly requests that this Tsumugu guy refrains from smoking while near his flower bed. Not taking kindly to authority, Tsumugu tosses his cigarette bud onto the sacred flower bed. GASP! So with his strange plant monster (and two-star Goku uniform), he attacks Tsumugu with full force. Tsumugu defeats Yaguruma easily and collects some kind of sample from him.
The episode continues with Ryuuko rescuing the idiotic Mako-chan from Biology goons. After finishing them off with the Sen-L-Soshitsu (Fiber Lost), Senketsu tells her that her blood is salty thanks to her new found cockiness. The mechanics of this uniform are quite strange indeed, but I'll accept that. It reminds me a lot of Luna pestering Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon) on what to do and how to eat. You don't see this too much anymore, usually in newer anime, the guardian critter or entity is useless 3 episodes in because the protagonist is already an expert at his or her new powers. Anyway, Mako-Jiminy crickets!! MAKO IS DEAD!
No, not really...she is knocked out by a barrage of needles shot by Tsumugu. Strangely enough,
Tsumugu mentions that by doing this, Mako's body will be rid of illness and she'll feel much better. Dude, you could of told her first! This is all well and good until Tsumugu aims at his real target: Senketsu! Ryuuko is quickly disarmed and pinned to the ground. She questions what club Tsumugu belongs to and he replies with his now established and stupid character trait:
One: He loves to list facts by stating them in numbered order.
Two: He's not a pervert.
He threatens her to take off her clothing, but Ryuuko refuses. Something stops him from finishing her off, so he walks away and promises to "strip her" tomorrow. Later that day, Aikuro has a talk with Tsumugu. He tells him that he should leave Ryuuko alone and that she could be a powerful ally. Tsumugu counters by saying if he doesn't get rid of Senketsu, it'll become a greater threat than the Kiryuins.
Mako's family sure can eat! O_____________________O;;;;
Meanwhile, Satsuki-sama is given the rundown on Tsumugu and his needle firearms. These needles are composed of a special alloy that can sever the connection between a human body and Life Fibers. In other words, a weapon that can cause serious damage to Goku uniforms. The Honnouji Academy student council isn't too concerned since Tsumugu target is Ryuuko Matoi only. With his focus on the Kamui, this gives them a new plan.
Senketsu begins to worry by telling Ryuuko that as long as she isn't wearing him, he won't come after her. Ryuuko doesn't care and plans to wear Senketsu again to defeat Satsuki whether he likes it or not. Big bad Tsumugu meets with his arrogant target once more. During their fight, Ryuuko underestimates the effectiveness of the needle gun. Suddenly, the Three Masters of the Rakugo Club show up along with the 100 pets club....oh wait....the Gardening club is back!
Asses were kicked. :'3 Totally useless clubs.
This leaves Ryuuko and Tsumugu to continue what they started. Senketsu reached his limit though after taking countless needle shots. Tsumugu comes in with more heavy handed threats *yawwwwwwwwwn* to get Ryuuko to strip Senketsu. And just to push this scene over the edge of mockery, he delivers his only character trait yet again:
One: He thinks the audience is so stupid that he'll remind us -yet again- that he has two pieces of information for Ryuuko.
Two: He implies that he knew a woman (someone he loved so doubt) who believed humans and Goku uniforms aren't enemies. Ryuuko doesn't know what he's talking about, but I do. This is some self righteous mission by Tsumugu to prevent Ryuuko from going through the same thing. I had this pegged the second I saw him in the flashback. ^^; Goddammit.
Senketsu detaches himself from Ryuuko to protect her, not because it wanted to abandon her, but I guess Tsumugu is too racist against polyester to notice that. In the nick of time, Mako (of all people) attacks Tsumugu from behind by sticking a mop in his butt. XD Lesson number one: Never ask Mako who she is, otherwise you'll pass away from laughter.
We get a little bit of depth from Mako when she mentions her loneliness before meeting Mako. I believe her, nobody would be this girl's friend in real life. XD Still, it's nice to see she isn't completely stupid. This gives Ryuuko a boost of confidence and badassery, which I hope will mean Tsumugu getting his ass handed to him.
^ No wait, even better. He realized that Goku uniforms can be friends with humans. Nonon Jakuzure shows up with her marching band clone army and orders Tsumugu and Ryuuko to surrender. The two were able to escape thanks to Tsumugu's swift actions, but the battle isn't over yet as Ryuuko makes a new promise to Senketsu to become even stronger. Just as long as he doesn't measure her BMI.
Ugh...here we go again.
Kill la Kill Episode 5 is easily the most serious episode so far. We experience and feel the bond between Senketsu and Ryuuko, Mako proves she isn't as dumb as she...is, and Tsumugu (although a totally bland character) has a flashback that makes us question what these Goku uniforms are really capable of. It's a fantastic episode with a more character-driven story. If they made Tsumugu less gimmick-y, I would of given this an easy perfect score.
+ Character study
+ Senketsu and Ryuuko's bond. Very Maka and Soul.
+ Beautiful animation.
+ Nonon Jakuzure orchestra montage.
- Tsumugu lacks character and a personality.
Re: Kill la Kill Discussion Thread
Catching up with Kill la Kill episodes 6, 7 and 8. Sorry I didn't get around to them sooner, but it's been such a busy holiday. Episode 9 just released a while ago, I think, so let's get down to the nitty gritty with these quick thoughts.
Kill la Kill Episode 6:
---
---
Episode six of Kill la Kill gives a little backstory to one of the Elite Four members. Sanageyama has been itching to fight Ryuko and we're given a flashback in the process. He was defeated and recruited a long time ago by Lady Satsuki. After Sanageyama gets his ass kicked by Ryuko, he requests Lady Satsuki for one last chance to prove himself. So in a somewhat admirable decision, Sanageyama has all his eyes shut for good so he can beat Ryuko with good ol' fashion senses. If the blind can excel with this, so could he. Not only did trusting his senses, he was just plain determined to beat her using his Kami given abilities that fighters take for granted. Ryuko is defeated, but manages to escape when Sanageyama's 3-Star Goku uniform overheats. Fantastic episode, it just goes to show that the villains can be thinkers; just as passionate as their stubborn meddling hero.
Kill la Kill Episode 7:
---
---
Kill la Kill episode seven proves that when you have an after school special, you can feed it to us without shoving it down our throats. When everyone at the academy start making their own clubs to earn themselves a more powerful uniform and richer lifestyle, Ryuko decides to do the same with Mako as the club president!? Hilarious scene when Ryuko realizes what it takes to run a club. Eventually, Ryuko's new "Fight Club" becomes a success and Mako's entire family is rewarded with riches and a mansion of a home with over three air conditioners! haha! This life of luxury comes at a price when Mako's family starts spending less time together and more time with their own activities. You feel for Ryuko who mentioned not that long ago about the happiness having a family brings her. She never had a real family until now, so we get depth and richness applied to her violent character. The problems only get worse when Lady Satsuki offers Mako a 2-Star Goku Uniform and permanent luxury to fight Ryuko. Mako holds back because she loves Mako and knows this isn't worth throwing her friendship away. Amazing episode with a good message without abandoning it's usual insane action/humor.
Kill la Kill Episode 8:
Episode eight of Kill la Kill presents us with Lady Satsuki making a seven day battle for all students who desire powerful Goku Uniforms. While this election is going on, we get some insight on Ryuko and Gamagoori's past. I won't talk about them since they're heavy spoiler and this isn't one of my full reviews, but let's just say that Ryuko's past loneliness is more understood than ever. As for Gamagaoori, we see that he was an agent of justice three years ago. Now he is being pursued by the Automotive Club to obtain his 3-Star Goku uniform. He uniform has the ability to absorb all kinds of punishment, then letting all that abuse explode on the opponent like a reactor. The episode ends with Ryuko, Gamagaoori and all the Elite Four winning top spots in the election. Isn't it obvious? In that way, the episode felt like a waste of time, but since we delved into the past of three characters (Satsuki was involved in both Ryuko and Gamagaoori's flashbacks), that made up for it.
Re: Kill la Kill Discussion Thread
I just started watching this today, I'm up to ep 10, can't wait for ep 11 tomorrow
