MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS! YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!!!

Farewell and adieu to you, fair Spanish ladies. Farewell and adieu, you ladies of Spain. For we've received orders for to sail back to Boston. And so nevermore shall we see you again.

Yeah, like this movie could contain anything that epic. ;p

Shark Night....3D is one of those movies you know is gonna suck, yet you purposely spend money on it anyway. The moment I saw this movie, you can tell what my initial reaction was because everyone in the theater had the same fucking reaction. "UGH! NOT ANOTHER BAD SHARK MOVIE!!!" Suffice it to say, it turned out to be very short and quite generic. Much to my amazement, it wasn't BAD, aside from the usual cheap effects and acting, but it was slow. So without stalling much longer, this is Shark Night! IN 3-D!

As always, the movie is in 3-D...and rest assure, this was not the first shark movie to be in 3-D.

Seriously, what didn't Jaws do?

So the movie stars a bunch of generic teenagers, going on a trip to a vacation home near a private salt water lake. You know where this is going the moment I typed SALT water. We are quickly introduced to what I thought would be our "Final Girl", Sara Houski. Played by Sara Paxon of Aquamarine fame. Now I'm a huge fan of Sara's, she's a good singer and actress, but I never kept track of her film history, so I'm not sure whether this type of movie is a first for her. I was quite skeptical if she could pull it off since she's used to being in children's movies. I'm pleased to say that Sara made this movie work, there was so much centered around her character. Apparently she had a back story with the antagonist of the film, no joke.

Sara Paxton. The hottest girl in this movie (sorry Katharine McPhee). Hands. DOWN. The 3-D gimmick finally paid off for me~

The other characters in the film are godawful with no real depth to them, even the dude who plays Sara's obvious love interest isn't interesting. We got the slut girl, the panicky girl, the narcissist, the Turd Sandwich dude and the token black guy. Oh and there's a dog too. All these delightful young people assemble at their vacation home out in the deep areas of the lake, only to be greeted by the local sheriff, who seems rather suspicious to me. He also knows Sara Paxton's character, which just adds to her importance. So the entire crew begin enjoying themselves, hoping to have a little fuck by the end of the day. But first, the teens take the token black guy water skiing! Or is it water surfing? He was doing some weird stunt during the sequence. Anyway, the movie wasted no time in ripping off the water skier scene from Jaws 2, by having one of the lake Sharks attack him. Whether he lives or dies, I will not say...does it matter?

It is later revealed that these sharks weren't put in the lake by accident, so upon discovering local rednecks (including the sheriff) being the ones who set these sharks loose, the teens end up in a fight for survival. These particular scenes I don't like since it reminds me of two very bad movies. Untraceable and Hostel. The evil rednecks reveal their motive for releasing these CGI sharks in the water to both Sara Paxton and her man. One of the reasons is understandable, Sara dated one of these white trash and he's bitter about her ditching him AND injuring his face during a diving/boat outing years ago? I forget. The other reason is a complete and utter cliche that completely drive me insane. The sheriff tells Sara's love interest that they want to make Shark Week-esque videos...except adding in some Faces of Death! In short, real people getting killed by sharks = internet ratings. They actually said this too, I am not kidding.

Who wrote this? Seriously.

After a few more deaths involving several different kinds of sharks from the horribly fake cookiecutters eating Katharine McPhee (I'm actually jealous of them), to the cartoon great white flying through the air, we arrive at the climax. Now at this point, only one thing could save this picture..if the female main protagonist suddenly becomes a warrior woman! In the original Jaws, Roy Scheider's character of Chief Brody was the LAST person you'd expect to defeat the shark. If Shark Night wanted to throw a curve ball (because it really needed one), it should of had Sara Paxton kicking the shit out of the rednecks and killing the remaining sharks so that nobody would have to worry about swimming in the lake. Oh wait, that's something a movie that WASN'T retarded would do. Instead, Sara is reduced to a damsel-in-distress as her ex-boyfriend dumps her in a shark cage, ready for the CGI sharks to feast on. Then here comes our hero, who killed the sheriff earlier in a very neat way, I'll admit. The love interest arrives to save the day, getting Sara's ex killed in the process (serves you right). And you'll NEVER guess who assists our heroes in the end? THE DOG!!! THE FUCKING DOG!!! You see, earlier the rednecks throw the dog overboard, trying to shock the audience. Sorry movie, we are not stupid. If the dog doesn't die immediately on camera, that means it survived, setting up for an "Awww!" scene.

Like I said earlier, Shark Night is not a TERRIBLE film. It's just a very DULL, unoriginal film that used every Jaws cliche they could think of. The only thing i enjoyed about it was Sara Paxton, who spent most of her screen time in her light blue bikini. The sharks were terrible and weren't the villains, that honor went to the rednecks who have a shark fetish. In a shark movie, you're supposed to hate the SHARKS! They were just tools here! The characters were bland, and the 3D effects were basic. Ever since Jaws 3-D, it's been safe to go back in the water and that was 1983. In 2011, Shark Night continues the tradition of bleh with zero scares and even less character development.

Luu Sky Sapphire reviews Colombiana:

Favorite movies and film reviews - Page 4 Zoe-sa10

When I first saw the trailer for this film, I immediately thought Angelina Jolie's Salt for Hispanic audiences. What I didn't expect was a superior action-thriller compared to Angelina's romp, hence forth what became known as Colombiana. A very sleek movie with a lot of incredible action sequences and a simple, but effective 'revenge' plot. The film stars Zoe Saldana, who I don't recall too well. I've never seen her previous works, so consider this my introduction to the actress. *researches* Wait...she was in...

Favorite movies and film reviews - Page 4 Avatar10

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

No bother, I can live with that. ^^;;;;

Viva la Raza! Okay, wrong shout out and wrong people to say it too. Colombiana starts off in 1992 Columbia where a little girl named Cataleya (named after the orchid) witnesses the death of her parents by a group of mobsters. With no explanation to her skills in out-running gangsters with automatics, she ventures to the United States (thanks to directions and access items from her father earlier) to meet her tio (uncle in my language, Spanish). He tells her to live a normal life now that she is given a second chance at living, but the only thing on Cataleya's mind is revenge. She asks him if she could train to become a killer and he pretty much dismisses the idea, but Cataleya is persistent enough to get her way. Her uncle then gives her an ultimatum on the decision, whether to be a killer or go to school, get smart and become a killer. Going with the latter (because knowing your times tables will enhance your sniping accuracy), Cataleya perfects her craft until fast forwarding 15 years into the future. She has already claimed several lives, but don't worry, she only killed people who deserved it like drug lords, mob bosses and child molesters. By learning all of this, it reminds me a lot of Noir, where Mireille and Kirika mostly put evil brains to sleep, but were at times challenged with the idea of how precious life can be. Kirika was anyway. In Colombiana, Cataleya worked more like a vigilante, in hopes that the man who killed her parents would surface. I never saw the logic in that, seeing how none of these hits were associated with the guy. Maybe they were, but the movie wasn't clear on that notion. Maybe I have to watch it again. ^^;

After a few more hits and dropped HINTS towards the man she's looking for, the CIA get involved in a nation-wide search for Cataleya. Cataleya even has a boyfriend, who knows her as "Jennifer". The boyfriend is really a plot device, representing the life that Cataleya wants deep down, but can't obtain fully without fulfilling her revenge. She often visits her boyfriend for a little talk and sex, before heading out again to pile up more bodies. It all leads to her latest hit (which was a very clever execution), that was the last straw for the Colombian mob. Cataleya's uncle informs her that these killings are only drawing the mobsters closer and closer to him and his family. Confident that nothing will happen to him, Cataleya continues avoiding the police to uncover more from the mobsters. Unfortunately she arrives too late, leaving her with no other option than to demand assistance from the head agent (who wanted her arrested throughout the film). She actually said she would murder his entire family if he doesn't help her...and this girl wanted to be like Xena: Warrior Princess!? Earlier in the movie there was a scene where Cataleya purchased a Xena comic (from where? Luu's collection?) and her uncle commented that she should be more like Xena, but our mamacita prefers the ways of a killer. Uh, you are aware that Xena has killed people before. ;p

The film's climax ends in a bang as Cataleya finally discovers the location of the people responsible for killing her entire family at this point, and makes short work of them. The ending should of driven me to tears, but what I saw for almost 2 hours was a film with great action sequences but hallow emotions from the main character.

In terms of action sequences, Colombiana is AMAZING. It excels the usual action film with some great stunts, creative sequences and awesome choreography. The story is typical, but works very well with it's presentation. What hurt this movie for me was the character of Cataleya. Not because she was played badly, since Zoe played that character nicely, but because the character itself was empty. You generally feel sorry for her that she lost her parents, but rather than move on to a peaceful life, she chose the road of revenge, knowing the consequences. The film portrays her as an intelligent woman in combat, but a lousy human being with others. This is considered a nit-pick at best, so try not to get offended. Besides, had she chosen the path of righteousness, the movie would of ended at the 30 minute mark. All in all, Colombiana delivers on it's action sequences and generic story done with style. Had Zoe played a Cataleya who was secretly haunted by her actions, questioning them on a routine basis, she would of been a more interesting character, along the same lines as Peta Wilson's Nikita, in La Femme Nikita.

i just went and saw "Horrible Bosses".
i didn't expect anything, as i only saw 1 completely pointless trailer, but people keep saying it looked "alright", so i ventured onward.
the movie kinda starts out with a couple of laughs, and is just kinda meh, and doesn't seem to go anywhere. the story quickly evolves into something you'd expect out of a more action more, but with a comedic spin on it. a whole bunch of random, and rather slap-stick things happen, and it's done. (i didn't want to be a spoiler lol).

it's nice to see some slap-stick again, since i hadn't seen any in a while, and overall the movie overs some pretty good laughs. i laughed at a decent portion of the movie, and it's quite amusing to relive when you're out of the cinema too.

so if you're undecided what to see at the movies, and wouldn't mind a couple of laughs (not hearty laughs, but more "lol" laughs), then i recommend it.

I just watched Final Destination 5 last week and I am creeped out by the movie. 'Dunno why. Like what Luu-sama wrote down before, when the FD5 is ending, I knew that it started back from the first Final Destination. I went like, "Hey, it started back from the first film!" A good film to watch I do say so myself.

XD Glad you liked it! It wasn't the best in the series obviously, FD5 had massive flaws. Still, it's an improvement over the godawful 4th film that didn't use the 3D effects as well as FD5.

By the way, me and Yuri-hime watched Real Steel and Rise of the Planet of the Apes recently. Look out for those reviews tomorrow.

Favorite movies and film reviews - Page 4 Real-s10
Luu Sky Sapphire Reviews: Real Steel

Back in my early years, I owned a very entertaining toy called the Rock'Em Sock'Em robots.

Favorite movies and film reviews - Page 4 Vintag10

My apologies, but the people behind this film are full of doo-doo if they didn't loosely based this film on the classic fighting toy. Regardless, Real Steel begs the question...is this yet another Transformers rip off? Well, yes and no. The makers of Real Steel certainly aimed to capture the crowd that loved the Transformers films. After all, good ol' Steven Spielberg was the producer. And we all know Steven loves CGI robots beating the living microwaves out of each other. His only regret is not getting Shia for the lead role. *sad panda face*

It's okay, Steven! We got Aussie Hugh Jackman from the X-Men films! That alone will bring in the cash from every straight woman across the planet. Jackman's character is Charlie Kenton; a deadbeat father who sucks at being a Real Steel competitor as much as he does a parent. Enter Baily (played by the beautiful Evangeline Lilly) who runs a gym owned by her father (now deceased) who was Hugh's boxing manager.

On one faithful day, Jackman is informed that his ex-girlfriend has passed on, leaving the child he never knew he had, up for grabs. The name of his son is Max, who I was dreading would be this timid child without a backbone. Fortunately, the kid turns out to have a set of balls, standing up to Jackman as if the roles were reversed. After an awkward meeting together, Max is fascinated to know his mutant-papa is into Robot fights and quickly wants in.

They enter an underground robot match to try the latest purchase from Japan; Noisy Boy. Thanks to miscommunication, n00bish experience and overconfidence, Hugh Jackman and his little wolverine lose the match against the only robot they'll ever lose to in the film. Oops? This leads to being even broker than before and letting down poor Bailey. Idea BUT WAIT! Hugh has a brilliant idea to make up for his string of losses and debt....STEALING! *thumbs up* So Hugh and son illegally venture into some old junk yard spot in hopes of finding parts to build a new robot. They must of ventured into Silent Hill as well because this junk yard was built next to a cliff.

Favorite movies and film reviews - Page 4 Silent10

Shawn Levy, you silly goose.

So upon saving Max from certain doom...nooooo, Hugh only assisted! The one who saved Max was an old model sparring robot buried deep beneath the cliff side. Meet Atom, a funny looking robot with a heart of gold and an artificial intelligence to match. Max falls in love with the modified functions he set for Atom and wants to try him out in a few matches. Hugh Jackman, being the deadbeat father, says nay as even he's smart enough to know that's not a fighter. It's a sparring piece of trash. Max being legitimately smart says yay and enters Atom in his very first match against the cast of Borderlands. Much to their amazement, Atom wins the match and continues winning a string of bouts that quickly make headlines. While all this was going on, the world heavy champion of robots known as "Zeus" continues his undefeated streak against all challengers. Zeus is controlled by an incredibly rich Asian man (aren't they all?) named Tak Mashido, with his right hand Russian ho. These two have the villainous personalities of wheat bread so let's move on. Seriously, can we be anymore cliche? Really, why not just have Max challenge the world champion himself without proving himself further-OH MY GOD...HE ALREADY GOT A MATCH AGAINST A PROFESSIONAL BOT. And guess what? Just guess what happens? No, he didn't lose...he won. And not only did our heroes and their Jesus-bot win, they called out the man himself! They want Mr. Moto and Irina Spalko to issue a match between Atom and Zeus. Though this kid only won a few bouts, including what could of been considered a fluke victory, they are already going to face the top robot in the world.

To this movie's credit, it borrows element from the best boxing movies like Rocky and Raging Bull. Only it comes off cheesy here and when the movie is based on robots, you have to just accept it. Anyway, after defeating the sorta cool looking Twin Cities bot, the match between Atom and Zeus is booked and broadcasted around the world on PPV. Even ESPN is in on the action! Wow guys, really? When it comes to the robot fights in the movie, none were very good. Remember I watch professional wrestling and UFC on occasion, even in "phony" fights, there needs to be some sort of ring psychology that makes you feel for the contenders of the match. In my case, and even my girlfriend's case, we were sucked in for the last match. No matter how cheesy it was, you wanted Atom to win. I think it was Atom's innocent (and lifeless) face and Baily's Wolverine-reminds-me-of-pappy tears that got to me. For all the movie's dumb moments, they did succeed in making Atom a character all his own. It's the only time I cared about this CGI robot. His fight against Zeus was very Rocky vs. Apollo Creed from the first Rocky film. It even had a similar ending...

Spoiler:

Overall, Real Steel is a fun yet stupid movie. It doesn't absolutely nothing new, but it is simple entertainment that isn't trying to earn an Oscar, so to it's credit, it did the job well. Hugh Jackman was alright, the kid was annoying, Evangeline Lilly was great, and the effects of the film were decent. I would be lying if I didn't enjoy the sequences at the arenas. There's nothing like hearing the roar of the audience as you battle for respect and championship gold. However the thing I'll always remember Real Steel for; is having my girlfriend with me to see it. It's our very first movie together and that alone made the experience more special. I forgot I was a movie critic for an hour and a half and just had fun. Just don't download the game on Xbox Live, it sucks monkey fuck.

Luu Sky Sapphire Reviews: Rise of the Planet of the Apes

When I was a child, my father sat me down and asked me if I wanted to watch a movie with talking monkeys in it. How could a 5 year old refuse such an invite? When it came to my father, there were only three great movies in his life: March of the Wooden Soldiers (with Laurel and Hardy), Disney's Peter Pan, and Planet of the Apes. When I told him I watched the newest Planet of the Apes film, he immediately asked how it was. I told him it was 105 minutes of tension. No different than how I felt about the 1968 classic with Charlton Heston.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes made up for the goofiness of Real Steel by taking itself seriously, using the motion-CGI to tell the story through the eyes of the chimpanzee; Caesar. Will Rodman (played by Spiderman's James Franco) works in pharmaceuticals to develop a permanent cure for people with Alzheimer's disease. One of them being Will's colorful father (played by John Lithgow). The drug they're working on for the cure is tested on several chimps. One of them nicknamed "Bright Eyes" manages to escape it's cage but ends up getting shot down. With the project scrapped, the order to have all the chimps killed is issued. All but one...Caesar. Under Will's care, Baby Caesar's intelligence slowly grows and over the years, has reached a level beyond that of any normal chimp. His intelligence and understanding of the world around him gets so advanced that he protects those he cares for. This gets him into trouble and ends up being locked away in a sanctuary for primates where Caesar faces the wrath of Draco Malfoy on a daily basis.

Joy.

During his stay at the facility, Caesar begins one heck of a pecking order. He starts to assemble the apes together in hopes of getting them to understand him. Animals organize?! Nah! Poppycock says Draco, as he continues to mistreat the apes. Meanwhile, with the results of the new virus working on his father, he makes an even stronger virus which becomes fatal to humans. This occurs when one of the staff gets infected by the virus by accident AND NEVER COMES FORWARD TO SHARE THIS INFORMATION! What a sack of shit. You already know that nuclear war explanation in the original movie was incorrect. It was a virus spread and all because of this dummy.

Life becomes worse for Will as his father's body rejects the stronger dose of the virus, resulting in his death. Will and his new girlfriend are saddened; just not as much as Caesar who realizes that the only true family that he has is standing besides him in this facility. During one night, Caesar escapes to stare at Will one last time. Very creepy scene, my girlfriend would agree. After that, Caesar steals the virus so he can infect the other apes and start a revolution unlike no other.

Now I must focus this paragraph to plug one certain scene:

Need I say more? That was arguably the most powerful moment in the film. It's obvious that Caesar's I.Q. continued to evolve over the course of the film sure, but that was the breaking point. There's an even more amazing talking scene after that, but this one wins by miles. Only because it was the peak of ape intelligence. Draco even paid tribute to the original 1968 film during this clip. It's like the original film was passing the torch to the "NO!" line. Sorry, I still prefer this:

But hey, "NO!" was a great contender! ^_^

I don't want to spoil anything further for this great film, although the last 20 or so minutes is devoted to action (something heavily promoted in the trailers). This needs to be seen in person to truly understand the awesome being captured on film. Bottom line, Rise is an amazing film. It's not an fantastic movie, but what it did was reinvent the Apes franchise for a mainstream adult audience. The movie is powerful; certainly making up for the weak 2001 release from Tim Burton.

1) Mr Kenton did know he had a kid, but when he knocked up his missus he bailed due to being "scared" or whatever it was

2) Zeus isn't controlled. he is merely told to start and stop, and apart from that his systems are just monitored.

3) Zeus is only controlled by the asian fellow in the last round of the last fight. you can see him push the other guy who was monitoring Zeus out of the way.

on another note...

4) i liked the movie, even though it was kinda cheesy lol. and i agree with you whole-heartedly on that part lol

5) his kid annoyed me and i hated the Justin Bieberishness about him, but the dancing was part of what got everyone's attention anyway so it was justified i guess.

and 1 little thing about Rise of the Planet of the Apes:
that chick was with James Franco's character for almost all of Caeser's life lol.

Damn baby, when you give a movie review...you spoiler the entire movie, dont'cha XDD

Welp, I guess I'll give my reviews for both movies as well =3

Like Sergay I also liked Real Steel even with all it's cheesiness lol. It had some heart so I enjoyed that. As for my rating I'll give it -

Real Steel - 3.5/5

~~~
And for Rise of the Planet of the Apes this was my second time watching it, and I highly enjoyed seeing it this second time, as I did seeing it the first =D
Good, powerful and well-acted scenes in the movie, with one scene in particular that is VERY powerful, but I won't spoiler it here as it's best for people to see it for themselves, to really get the full impact of the scene =3
And this role that actor James Franco played is by far my fave role of his so far =D
He is doing a really great job of leaving his 'Spider-Man movie roots' behind him, and really branching out and growing as an actor with movies like Rise of the Planet of the Apes =3
So, my rating for this movie is~
Rise of the Planet of the Apes - 4.5/5
X'D Honestly, I tried holding back for Rise at the very least. Real Steel was a cheesefest with a side of cliche, so I didn't mind being spoiler heavy for that. Rise is a more three-dimensional film with some surprises here and there, so it's best to have people see it for themselves. :)
I agree about James Franco, he played his role as Will quite well! (WILLQUITEWELL XDD). I've never seen any Franco related pictures away from the Spiderman trilogy, so it's nice to see him branch out and do something more meaningful. Sorry Spidey fans, in retrospect, only the first Spiderman film was good. The 2nd is boring and the 3rd...groovin' emo Peter? Venom dies in 10 minutes? Really? REALLY? AT least Batman and Robin admits it was a comedy spoof.
Anyway, Rise is a great film and it was awesome watching it with you in the theater that day, sweetheart. Even though we traveled all the way up the Uber Aztec pyramid they call a movie theater to reach it. XDDD Next time we see each other, we can watch Rise and the 1968 classic back to back. ^_~ My treat.
agreed!! Rise was an excellent movie, and powerful. honestly, i wasn't expecting much when i went to see it (i have never seen more than about 10 minutes of the original but i know the concept) and the ads kinda made me not want to see it, but it was a very good movie. and james Franco played an excellent role!
Finally, a REAL vampire movie returns to the big screen:
Underworld: Awakening 3D
Selene is back to lay the smackdown on evil vampires, werewolves and humans once again! This third (technically fourth...the last one was a distant prequel) Underworld looks extremely promising. And we get the return of Selene, my favorite character in the series played by Kate Beckinsale. <3 Cannot fucking wait! EXCELLENT start for 2012.
i'm so going to watch this. underworld is just great! kate backinsale as selene is just *insert dirty/hot/sexy stuff here*!
i heard that resident evil 5 should play in 2012, too... i hope this one is going to be better than afterfail...*ahem* afterlife i mean. but then again, that wouldn't be much of a problem i think, since the last one was so terribly bad.
and i'm looking forward to the next sherlock holmes with robery downey jr. ^^
Just finished Metropolis (finaly some anime on Czech TVs, lol) and at first look it was exactly as desribed, the animation was Disney-like with inspiration from original american motion picture. But I was honestly surprised by this movie and really touched by the story. I wouldn´t belive I would say this but it really aproached and touched AI-philosophy issues more than Asimov´s I, Robot or Spielberg´s Artificial Inteligence. And the ending pretty sad.
+
And I countinued of course with John Carpenter´s the THING, course this time I knew what I was getting. The only movie that can beat Thing´s incredible atmosphere is the first Alien movie. Got a rofl moment when TV banner with cute dog for family-comedy came exactly in the time of the scene with husky dogs in the cage.
Definitely two favorite movies now. Perfect ending to a 48-hour day :)
sorry luu, but for my part i think afterlife was the worst RE-movie. if you think otherwise, i've no problem with that ^^ okay, i have to admit that people can watch it, but i kind of missed something like a story. even in a zombie-action-movie can be at least a little bit of a story and not just milla-looking-as-hot-as-possible-during-zombie-shooting sweatdrop nothing against milla, she's cool.
and WOHOOOOOOOOOO! michelle is back in RE5 to kick ass! *airjump*
i just found out on friday myself and i was so hyped even if i managed it to get ill in the past days. it's like someone just had heared my prayers for her to come back. i even started to write a ff myself after afterlife out of frustration that jill was allowed to be back and rain not. okay... with a zombied and head-shooted person it's kind of hard to bring her back to live, but i'm looking forward to se with what idea they came up with and if it's anything like my idea for my ff ^^ now i really have hope, that the fifth one will be any good XD well... if she didn't just appear in some flashback scenes which hardly count 5 minutes...
they even want to bring back carlos and one oO
Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader - 8.75 - 9.0
Beautiful movie. Gorgeous CGI. Story captured my interest and attention way more than I thought it would. Absolutely loved the character Eustace from practically the beginning, thanks to the acting chops of the kid who played him. Breakout performance. Looking forward to seeing him get his true starring role in the next Narnia movie =3
Luu Sky Sapphire reviews The Adjustment Bureau
Favorite movies and film reviews - Page 4 Adjust10
Reviewing this film is going to be difficult because so little happens in it, that it'll be like doing a review about a man walking from one side of the street to the other side of the street.
When I first saw the trailer for The Adjustment Bureau, I immediately dismissed it. I do not feel guilty about this as you know damn well how movies are these days with their constant disappoints and failure to capture what the 80s and 90s have done. Needless to say, after so damn long, I finally got to see it this morning. To sum up this movie, let me put things in YOUR perspective: Was it your choice to read this review or your destiny?
This film on the surface looks gorgeous, the stunning visual shots of New York City (mainly in the Manhattan area) look really nice and the cast is pretty decent. Matt Damon plays a popular congressman who is told of what his future SHOULD be by a group called the Adjustment Bureau. He constantly outruns these agents of Fate itself to be with the woman he loves (played by Emily Blunt).
Already it sounds like a melodramatic chase film and it sorta is, reminding me a lot of 2004's The Forgotten with Julianne Moore. Don't remember that film? Well, you weren't missing much. The problems with this film are similar; you have a great cast but feed them the most half-assed boring script known to mankind. And this is unfortunate as I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE (and I can't stress that word enough for her...) Emily Blunt. Emily is a terrific actress with unmatched beauty to go along with her, but she doesn't do anything for this film other than be a plot device for Matt Damon to keep fighting the good fight.
You see, Damon is a politician on the rise, programmed to do well with the public, with everything he does selected by consultants, who run things by focus groups. Right down to which tie he wears and he even makes mention of this in a speech. Emily Blunt is there to inspire him to make a great concession speech, and then is supposed to vanish from his life after their lovey-dovey meeting in the bathroom, but the Adjustment Bureau (charged with making sure the right events occur, with the right people in power) screws up, and they fall in love.
Okay, I'm confused now. Why are these people so important that they need to be kept separated? Naturally, like The Forgotten, I pegged the Adjustment agents to be aliens who are once again testing the boundaries of the human heart. I'm not too far off the mark in this film, but what we're given is a complete load of ass crap.
No matter what the agents say or do, Matt Damon's character persistently chases after Emily Blunt so much that even after 3 YEARS and 11 MONTHS , HE STILL WANTS HER. Now I am a devoted guy myself, but if a group of suits with superpowers told me to stay away from someone, I'd be too scared to try anything (ok I lied). Oh, but not Matt Damon, no! He is fortunate enough to have one of the agents be a friend, warning him constantly about the consequences. Despite the kind agent's advice, Matt Damon goes after Emily some more, falling deeper in love with her and vice versa.
The middle of the film centers on the agents desperately trying to fix the situation, but to no avail. Matt Damon continues to defy the odds in order to secure a happy ending with Emily, who is also a successful dancer with a promising future (failed to mention that earlier...bad me, bad). So says one of the big cheeses of the Adjustment Bureau, played by General Zod of Superman II.
General Zod tells Matt that being with Emily will only crush her dreams of being a famous dancer, among other reasons from his bullshit list. Damon tries once again to walk away from Emily and 11 months later, tries once more to win Emily's heart and stop her from going through with a farce wedding. With the help of the friendly agent, Matt is informed that the Bureau is aware that Damon will interfere with Emily's wedding, so he gives him tips on how to get to her...with hats. That's right, the friendly agent gives Matt a HAT, because these special HATS are apparently used to teleport you through doors around NYC. Acting sort of like keys into various areas.
So I thought to myself, "these can't be aliens, because aliens can't use magic." As the film progressed, they keep mentioning their "Chairman" is the one responsible for the design we're all supposed to go through as people. So we have agents that know what EVERY SINGLE PERSON on Earth is doing and a "Chairman" causing the supernatural to occur...
Oh. My. G-
Favorite movies and film reviews - Page 4 35318210
FUCK YOU MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did I mention these...angels...have trouble sensing Matt Damon's presence when there's water? The entire final chase sequence was a success for Matt because he used the rain to his advantage. So omnipotent beings CAN'T SEE THROUGH WATER!?
During the middle of the final chase scene, Matt Damon's character finally spills the beans to Emily Blunt about the Bureau and them being responsible for him walking out on her twice. This all leads to one last confrontation with General Zod who was about to punish Matt by erasing his memory (as promised earlier), but here comes Casper the Friendly MIB agent to inform General Zod that the "Chairman" has decided to change the plan for these two. Why you ask? Because it was a test this whole time.
A test.
A test.
A test.
RAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWR!!!!
ALL THAT BULLSHIT FOR NOTHING!!! SO IF THESE TWO WERE MEANT TO BE TOGETHER IN PREVIOUS LAYOUTS OF THE PLAN, WHY CHANGE YOUR MINDS ONLY TO TEST THEM, WHEN YOU KNOW WHAT THE FUCKING RESULT WAS GONNA BE THIS WHOLE TIME?! I'LL TELL YOU ALL WHO GOT TESTED; THE FUCKING AGENTS! BECAUSE IF THE CHAIRMAN IS INDEED G-O-D, HE OBVIOUSLY KNEW WHAT THE OUTCOME WOULD BE AND THUS GENERAL ZOD AND HIS CREW WERE GIVEN A LESSON THAT HUMAN LOVE IS THE MOST POWERFUL FORCE ON EARTH! MAN YOU GUYS ARE QUICK. /ENDSARCASM.
The film poses this question: Can free will, determination, and love triumph over determinism? Well, yeah, no shit it did. This film couldn't of wasted my time more with it's obvious motivation and organization. But you know what? In a strange way, I sort of liked it. It was a STUPID film, not a BAD one. It offers very little in an impressive package with barely any special effects, plus you want Mat Damon's character to get the girl because this heterosexual relationship is pure puppy love from start to finish and I'd be a real villain if I said they didn't belong together. But the road he took to obtain someone he barely knew was not only a burden, but unrealistic. The joke's on me though, because as a man in love myself, nothing else in this world matters when you've found your soul mate. Not even General Zod and his Frank Sinatra posse. TAB is a silly movie wrapped in a beautiful package.
Luu Sky Sapphire rates The Adjustment Bureau:
Aoi maid Aoi maid .5 / Aoi maid Aoi maid Aoi maid Aoi maid Aoi maid
2.5/5 Aoi Senoh.
RENTAL-BUY IT JUST FOR EMILY BLUNT.
I guess, you are not the only one, it is really a movie for smaller audiences, it wasn´t really much successfull, although I like very much.
