Bodacious Space Pirates/Moretsu Pairetsu (Time for some Piracy!!)
Up until recently, this show has only had subtle yuri hints. For those unfamiliar with this series, I'll summarize it. It takes place in the future (duh) after a war broke out between a group of planets and an empire. Now before anyone starts thinking that this is another Star Wars rip-off, let me tell you, it ain't! After the war, pirates were given a legalized letter of mark where they can actually perform piracy for companies and politicians alike under legality. The star of the show, Marika Katou, has recently inherited her father's ship, the Bentenmaru, and has become captain of his crew. Still a teenager and in school, she's part of her school's yacht club and knows how to pilot a spacecraft very well.
She befriends a girl named Chiaki Kurihara, who's very much like Natsuki, but has a weakness for chocolate parfets. She learns all she can to be a pirate and befriends even a pair of princesses during one of her jobs.
One of the characters, Lynn Lambretta, has been confirmed to be a lesbian and was in love with the yacht club's president, Jenny Dolittle. But up until recently, it didn't seem like the feeling was mutual.
- Spoiler:
- But in today's episode, they confirmed that they were indeed lovers by kissing in front of the whole yacht club, who had to replace the Bentenmaru's crew who were in isolation and couldn't be aboard. This has confirmed that this is indeed a YURI anime!

Re: Bodacious Space Pirates/Moretsu Pairetsu (Time for some Piracy!!)
My DVD set (bootleg is better than nothing, right?) for Moretsu Pirates arrived a few days ago. Tomorrow will be the day I start watching it, so I thought it was the perfect time to revive this thread.
My interest in the series skyrocketed when my girlfriend showed me the following images:
Oh and what I read on wikipedia:
The vice-president of the Space Yacht club. A troublemaker and skilled hacker, Lynn is a lesbian and Jenny's lover.
Sold. My gf's taste in yuri anime/manga titles is quite good and she got me into four series since meeting her, so this one has to be promising...
I'll be back with a review once I finish all 26 episodes.

SPOILERS FOR Bodacious Space Pirates EPISODES 1-10. DO NOT PROCEED IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE SERIES!
Marika enjoying Chiaki's Natsuki-like behavior.
Finished up to episode 10 of this very interesting anime series. Upon my first viewing, I was foolishly expecting a lot of yuri overtones because of my girlfriend's ravings. Turns out the series isn't that heavy on the yuri. Instead, we a treated to a sort of coming of age story for protagonist Marika Kato. Marika's father was a pirate captain who met his end at the hands of...*holds back laughter* food poisoning. Even his own wife Ririka (former pirate and sexiest cougar in this universe formerly known as "Blaster Ririka" ) found this hilarious, just so we're clear on that. Because of bloodline plot devices, Marika is chosen to take his place as Captain of the Bentenmaru. Along the way she meets Chiaki-chan...
Chiaki: Grrr.
...Chiaki Kurihara, the resident tsundere girl and sole heir of another pirate space vessel named Barbaroosa. She gets angry about everything! O_o; I know she's a Tsundere, but damn. The yuri aspect of this series focuses a lot on Marika and Chiaki. The classic yuri slash dumb ditz and sandy vagina pairing (Usagi x Rei, Madoka x Homura, Arika x Mashiro, etc.) are thrust into several really cute scenes together. Marika doesn't seem to go gaga for any other character except Chiaki-chan. Lots of hinting there for any yuri lover. Oh and as I've pointed out before, Bodacious Space Pirates has it's canon couple in Lynn and Jenny. <3
Jenny, the heir of a major space "shipping" ( ) conglomerate and her harem, having a discussion with Princess Gruier Serenity.
The first ten episodes so far get us introduced to the characters of Jenny's Space yacht harem and then the main pirate crew. It also dealt with Marika getting accustomed to her pirate duties while balancing school work. You have to admire Marika's spirit to handle such a dangerous job and aiming to graduate High School. Bodacious Space Pirates is set in the distant future (what isn't these days?) on the planet "Sea of the Morning Star". With an advanced civilization that resembles Earth, this world sure contains some interesting technology. In one scene, model photos were click-and-dragged out of magazine into 3D images! I found this scene a little funny because of how pointless it the idea was. XD
I'm digging the series so far, it has a good amount of humor mixed with it's space Technobabble. No wait, let's convert that word so it fits the series terminology: Techno-Electronic Warfare. In the Pirates universe, being a electronic warfare specialist is essential to every character. Most of the battles consist of hacking rather than over-the-top space battles. There are some space battles here and there, but they're more like standoffs for now. I can't recall how many times Misa Grandwood said:
"Fire a warning shot~"
In addition to:
"Erectronic warfaru~"
Their latest quest to assist Princess Gruier in finding the golden ghost ship is where I left off. Here's to hoping the yuri scenes between Marika x Chiaki-chan and Lynn x Jenny intensify. For the story, I'd like Marika to come face to face with something so terrible, she can't handle it. Not until she fights back, eventually becoming the greatest *legal* pirate. Thoughts of episode 11-26 coming soon.
Hold on, there's one more thing I haven't covered yet. You know how mayonnaise is crack to Natsuki Kuga? Seems like Chiaki has an illegal drug of her own...
- Spoiler:
CHOCOLATE PARFAIT!?

I'm pretty sure I started watching this a while ago...it obviously didn't hold my attention, though that could just be because I'm easily distracted
Would you recommend watching this Luu? I might give it another shot :3

I'm only on the 15th episode now...a little too soon to tell. What I've seen so far is enough to tickle your fancy meh thinks. Chiaki and Marika are adorable, and you'll find yourself masturbating at the sight of Ririka (Marika's hot mom). The story is a little simple, so don't expect too much from it. This is a little space adventure series with yuri subtext. TONS of it.

((Sucks about the long wait, otherwise great news! I'm not surprised either, Bodacious Space Pirates is very popular in Japan. Time to review the series, it'll be up tonight.))
Re: Bodacious Space Pirates/Moretsu Pairetsu (Time for some Piracy!!)
My final thoughts on the series:
While not a masterpiece, Bodacious Space Pirates provided quite a thrill ride. We've seen pirates in SPAAAACE before, just without yuri elements thrown here and there. The animation is very beautiful, crisp and clean with really cool character designs and costumes. Ririka Kato (Marika's mama) and Tsundere Chiaki are the biggest examples, these two are gorgeous to look at.
There's a lot of comedy if you're looking for a lighthearted story, our protagonist, Captain Marika Kato, is a likable girl who never has a dull moment. She reminds me a lot of Arika Yumemiya from Mai-Otome, except she probably catches on a little quicker. Though she's nowhere near as charismatic, Marika has tons of golden moments with certain characters like Chiaki. They are so cute together, it's a real treat to see the subtext boiling.
When I see the words "Galactic Empire" in the subtitles, I immediately think of a certain George Lucas classic...can't remember which one. It was probably Indiana Jones. /
The story is not it's strong point, sadly. I found it to be a little mediocre, even when the quest for the Golden Ghost Ship started. It's not bad or anything, I just feel after that climatic end with Quartz, Marika's whole adventure felt by the numbers. Nothing you haven't seen, but enjoy it for what it is.
While the music is okay at best, it's the opening by Momoiro Clover Z that kicks ass. To explain how catchy "Bodacious Space Symphony's Movement VII (Infinite Love)" truly is isn't easy. Listen for yourself and if you're not humming it, you're must be a lifeless corpse:
Bottom line: Bodacious Space Pirates is stupid, but fun. Interesting characters, decent animation, great music, an easy to follow plot, likable main characters, and YURI! GOTTA HAVE YURI!
If only they would make a series centered on Ririka's glory days as "Blaster Ririka". I'm salivating at the concept already.

Re: Bodacious Space Pirates/Moretsu Pairetsu (Time for some Piracy!!)
((from the Yuri image thread))
Let meh tell you the story of Jenny and Lynn. :'3
There was a beautiful girl named Jenny Dolittle. Forced to marry a MAN. *GASP*
Then one day, Jenny found a way to escape and make her way aboard the Bentamaru. There she reunites with her female prince, the very manly Lynn.
So enchanted by their reunion, the two could no longer control their hearts. And this escalates into the LOUDEST "Kyaaaa!" ever heard in any anime.
Chiaki, the resident Tsundere reacts with complete envy. >:3 YOU WISH YOU COULD DO THIS WITH MARIKA!!!!
Jenny and Lynn kiss yet again. Lynn informs her lover that she doesn't mind people staring at them kissing. And so, Jenny and Lynn lived happily ever after with pure untapped gayness~
THE END.

I can't picture yuri in Twilight at all...
Anyway, I agree! Jenny and Lynn need a spin-off focusing on them! I like Chiaki and Marika too, they're super gay with each other.

4/5 is still kind of high for an anime series you found decent. XD Enjoy your review, Dye. I don't think many reviewers for Bodacious Space Pirates exploited each and every single character archetype via memory. A lot of the secondary characters share a brain, it seems. Still, I enjoyed it as a subtexty series. Marika could of used more development herself. As you said, she lost the ID ring one time. This was after establishing that she is a responsible Captain. Oops! It's a solid 2.5 out of 5 for me. Some things worked and it was fun, but nothing compelling or vastly memorable.
Jenny and Lynn on the other hand...

I agree that as an overall scale, 4/5 is high for a rating. I took into account that this was supposed to be the light, feel-good kind of anime, so while there is still A LOT of improvement that could be done, if you take it for what it is, it's decent. If there was supposed to be any kind of serious undertone to it, I would have rated it much lower. :3

There were times it was heading in that direction. Bodacious doesn't take itself seriously for long, though. Development could of helped the series a lot. We see progression in Marika, but it isn't by leaps and bounds. They could of played off her and Chiaki's relationship too. Chiaki seem to be the only one Marika loves to tease. ;3
